Noticing Water Workshop
2023
Designing Climate Justice Symposium - RSD12 Symposium: Entangled in Emergence
This workshop engaged people in conversations about water rights and equality through an experiential mapping activity. Participants were invited to walk around the Emily Carr University campus noticing water’s physical presence as well as signs of its past/hidden-present existence. By engaging in these conversations in an embodied rather than theoretical way, understanding how water moves and behaves in the world can become a more intentional and compassionate action - supporting in the mediation of climate disasters and in the development of a reciprocal relationship with water.

DESIS Lab representative at the ECU 100 Years In The Making: Research at ECU exhibition
Originally developed as a student capstone project and later included as a workshop in the Designing Climate Justice Symposium, What Lies Under the Ground Beneath Your Feet? looks at the relationship between people, the urbanscape, and water. Facilitated by five tools- a tarp, a mat, water bottles, a listening device, and maps- people are encouraged to playfully walk through the city and notice water's presence: visible and invisible, above ground and below ground, free or conformed into pipes. The project is ever evolving; constantly being added on to by the community that interacts with it. It invites citizens to deepen their connection with the place they live in notice how it exists, listen to what it says, advocate for its rights; and with that, start moving towards a more resilient future with reciprocity between humans and more-than-humans.
